I'm sure you know this but, according to Paul McCartney, Pet Sounds was the reason Sgt Pepper was made. Paul said after listening to Pet Sounds he thought "Oh, my God, this is brilliant! What are we going to do to keep up with this." So the Beatles answer back to the Beach Boys was Sgt. Pepper.

In my opinion the Beatle's Sgt. Pepper is far superior to Pet Sounds. To me Pet Sounds is just ordinary, nothing special. Pepper is the masterpiece.Bullethead wrote:...the Beatles answer back to the Beach Boys was Sgt. Pepper.
One of my favorites...
The Who - Quadrophenia

I always thought it was the other way around. That Brian Wilson heard Sgt Pepper which apparently inspired his concept album Pet Sounds.Bullethead wrote:I'm sure you know this but, according to Paul McCartney, Pet Sounds was the reason Sgt Pepper was made. Nope, other way around. Pet Sounds was 1966 and Pepper was 1967.

Re: Favorite Albums
Sinatra released many "concept" albums in the 1950s for Capitol Records. His best being In the Wee Small Hours from 1955, where the songs, all ballads, were organized around a central mood of late-night isolation and aching lost love, with the album cover strikingly reinforcing that theme. At that time he just divorced the beautiful Ava Gardner.

Re: Favorite Albums
A very popular recent example of a concept album is Green Day's 2004 album, American Idiot. It follows the transformation of a disilusioned suburban teenager ("Jesus of Suburbia") into a darker, city-living persona ("Saint Jimmy"). Songs on the album tell of Saint Jimmy's exploration of his new self, meeting and falling for a girl (and their eventual breakup), and his reverting to his Jesus of Suburbia persona and returning home to the suburbs.

Re: Favorite Albums
Johnny Cash's Ride This Train chronicles tales of Americana, woven together with narrative by Cash and train sounds. Each track begins with "Ride this train to ..." and tells the story of that city.

Re: Favorite Albums
Is that Johnnny Cash on the cover of that album?
BTW> you should see Joaquin Phoenix, the actor that played Cash in the movie "I Walk The Line".
He's got some mega beard now. World's away from the guy he played in that movie.
Here's the mega bearded Phoenix on a recent David Letterman Show.
Warning: Letterman as usual was very disrespectful to his guest.

Re: Favorite Albums
When Jay Leno leaves late night for primetime in September, Letterman will be king of late night talk and probably even more disrespectful to his guests. I never enjoyed Letterman's interviews. It's always been about him and not his guests. Don't like Conan or Fallon either. Craig Ferguson at times can be really funny.
