To Shine OR Not To Shine, That Is The Question?
To Shine OR Not To Shine, That Is The Question?
Whether you are bald-by-genetics, or bald-by-choice, chances are you are among the ranks of bald men that want their heads to shine. My personal experience has proven that my bald shiny head gets a lot of attention and can be used to my advantage. A shiny head is a healthy head. If your scalp lacks shine, the first step to increase shine is to replace the scalp's natural lost moisture. Dull shaving implements can be the first cause of a dry scalp, quickly followed by lack of hydration and sun protection.
When shaving your bald head, make sure you use a sharp, clean razor each and every time. Applying a shaving cream will ensure a slick and supple surface prior to making a smooth shave. Always make sure the scalp is well moisturized and that the skin is supple prior to shaving. It's always best to take a warm hot shower for a few minutes, followed by shaving.
Moisturizers
Once you're shaved and smooth, moisturizer is a must to restore hydration and increase shine. Products like Noxzema work great to restore moisture and repair the damaged skin while adding a healthy glow to the scalp.
Styling Products, Oils, and Waxes
Hairspray, (yes I did say hairspray) can also work to create a shiny scalp. Spray the scalp evenly with a light hold spray and you're set! Oil and waxes are another avenue to consider when seeking products to make a bald head shine. Baby oil can be applied in a circular motion to the scalp and rubbed out with a warm towel to create a buffed, shiny effect. Light-hold waxes that enhance shine can also be used and buffed out to create a similar effect.
Keep the Shine: Removing Products
No matter the shine or buffing product that you use, always make sure you cleanse the scalp thoroughly to remove product build up. Over time, excessive product and dead skin can accumulate on the scalp, leaving a dull and lifeless appearance. If you find your scalp is dry and itchy, you may want to experiment with a light exfoliant to remove dead skin. When massaged into the scalp in a circular manner, a mild exfoliant with slough away dead skin flakes, exposing healthy, shiny skin.
Sun Protection
If you spend time outdoors, keep in mind bald heads need plenty of sunscreen to prevent parched skin and sunburned scalp. A simple solution is to wear a hat or bandanna whenever you are outdoors. If you've experienced over-exposure to the sun, apply aloe immediately to help soothe and heal the damaged skin.
To Sum It Up
There are many reasons men choose to go bald. Bald heads are easy to maintain when well taken care of. To enhance this unique asset, remember to cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and protect! These simple steps will ensure you're scalp is always healthy and shiny.

Thanks for that long and informative post. I started using Noxzema when I ran out of J & J Baby Oil.
It works for me.

There's a product called Bald Headshine. I was wondering if any of you have used it?

I was using that headslick lotion for an aftershave with good results. Although it can be hard to find and a little pricy but you get whatyou pay for. With that being said though..I have found a more inexpensive route. You should try using 100% aloe vera gel. Keep the bottle in the fridge for a nice sensation. It only takes a little squirt about the size of a dime. It will give you good moisturizing protection thru out the day especially in the winter time when the air in your home tends to be a little on the dry side. Try it...give it a shot! I am sure you will like it

You should get a patent on that aloe vera regimen. Works like a charm, each and every time.Timmj wrote:You should try using 100% aloe vera gel. Keep the bottle in the fridge for a nice sensation.

I find that aloe vera gel has a drying effect on my skull during the winter months. I need something more moisturizing. I've experimented with several products and have found that Ponds Cold Cream combats the dryness and gives my head a bright gleaming shine.

Headlube + Hot Six Oil = Glossy Perfection
I still follow the routine of a very good friend of mine, Henry Zucker. A good buffing with a soft cloth, and my heads shining like a beacon for the day.

I suggest finishing off a morning headshave with a quality mositurizer containing Shea Butter as the key ingredient. I found this inexpensive moisturizer at my local health superstore - Nourish Skin™ Organic Raw Shea Butter Intensive. Not only does it leave my head soft and supple, it gives it a lasting sheen.

My butter of choice - Palmer's Shea Butter Formula with Vitamin E. Vitamin E, a natural anti-oxidant and skin protectant, provides additional benefits - shine.

I'm always looking for things to add polish to the dome. No matter what the product, I always finish my head off with an inexpensive terry shammy cloth.

Re: To Shine OR Not To Shine, That Is The Question?
I start with an old school slap of Dickinson's WH, followed by an application of Afta shave balm. 5 to 10 minutes later, I finish it off with Headlube Glossy. For extra pimp and shine, I wait an additional 5 minutes and rub in a drop of J & J baby oil. The last few days I've added the shammy to my shine regimen and folks are blinded by my gleaming dome.

In lieu of a true shammy, I've been achieving a high gloss shine with an ordinary terry dish rag.

What's the point of razor shaving your head, if you don't get it to shine. Might as well buff cut it. For me, the shinier the better.
