Happy Memorial Day

This coming Monday, the American side of this fourm will pause to remember a group of men and women to whom we owe every freedom we enjoy. The strength of our nation has been built on the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives protecting it. This weekend you’ll have the opportunity to remember those who gave their lives in the name of freedom. How you choose to spend this time is a personal choice only you can make.
It is my hope that at some point over the next few days you’ll take a moment to consider those sacrifices and what they’ve meant to this country.
Remember our loved ones in the jungles of Vietnam, who fought a war thousands of miles away while their fellow Americans debated it at home. They fought an enemy emboldened by our country’s discord, and they fought for one another.
Remember a generation of Americans that is unfortunately dwindling by the day. Our World War II veterans rode a groundswell of anger after Pearl Harbor. They flooded the recruiting offices and defended this nation with a will and resolve that we still owe them for to this day.
Thousands of them never came home from the Far East, France or Great Britain. Many were lost while serving on or beneath the sea. Those who lived led this country for 60 years after the war, but their numbers are diminishing. Remember them this weekend.
Think back to the day immediately following 9/11 and the thousands of young Americans who, like their grandparents, joined the military to defend this nation against an enemy who attacked us because we are a country that embraces freedom. We’ve lost many of them too, in Iraq and Afghanistan. Remember them as you do our veterans of Korea, World War I, II and Vietnam.
This weekend is a time we’ve traditionally set aside to honor the sacrifices of those who died in service of our nation. Memorializing them goes to the core of who we are. Our thoughts should be with them every day, and I hope yours are. And, if not every day, then certainly this Monday.
Stay safe this weekend. Enjoy your families, and never forget the men and women who took an oath to defend this nation, that made the ultimate sacrifice upholding freedom and democracy.

I'll be on the west coast enjoying the holiday with my uncle MightyA.
Looking forward to tanning my dome on his boat Sunday, followed by an OC style BBQ.

I'll be celebrating the day with family and some friends. Memorial Day is when we open our pool up for the season. Hopefully it will be warm enough to enjoy my first hair-free swim.

I avoid pools as much as possible. Chlorine reigns havoc on my blonde hair. One time a pool had so much chlorine in it, my hair turned green. I prefer the lake or the ocean, but if I do swim in a pool, a cap is a must.AtomicGleam wrote: Memorial Day is when we open our pool up for the season. Re: Happy Memorial Day
jitterbugdoll, welcome. I also have a dislike for pools. I had very bad experiences as a kid swimming in over-chlorinated pools - burning eyes, ear infections and skin rashes. Now I use protective gear, including earplugs and goggles. Takes the fun out of swimming, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
For most people Memorial Day is a three-day holiday weekend to head to the lake or beach, cook out on the grill, enjoy fun in the sun at the pool, take a camping trip, visit amusement parks or travel. Too many people never stop and think about the real reason Memorial Day is a holiday. It is a day for America to remember those who lost their lives serving our country in war. So take time this Memorial Day to remember those who lost their lives fighting for our country so we can be free.

I can relate to that. Being of German-Scottish extraction and having blonde hair with fair skin, the summer sun and the pool were my worst enemies. I spent the summers of my youth with green hair and freckles. Not a pretty sight.jitterbugdoll wrote:Chlorine reigns havoc on my blonde hair. Now that you shave your head, you no longer have to worry about green hair.Darby wrote: I spent the summers of my youth with green hair and freckles. Not a pretty sight.

Hats are an essential accessory, starting today, through the rest of the long hot summer.

....and very essential to headshaver's living on the bayou. Memorial Day marks the start of misquito season. After my first headshave, I was bitten directly on my razor-burned and coconut moisturized head. From that day on, I learned to never apply sweet smellin' creams to my unprotected head.Sanderson wrote:Hats are an essential accessory, starting today, through the rest of the long hot summer.

Can't do that with my kids. They have me off my feet all day keeping them in check.
