Ford Introduces New Taurus-based Police Car

Post  Rodger on Thu Mar 18, 2010 8:39 am

Ford Motor Co. gave U.S. law enforcement officials a look Friday at the Taurus-based police car the company will use to replace the Crown Victoria cruiser.

The Crown Victoria model has become a police department standard, accounting for 75 percent of the police car market with annual sales of around 45,000, the Detroit Free Press reported.

But Ford is phasing out the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor in 2011.

Ford Americas President Mark Fields called the Taurus-based car "the ultimate police vehicle."

The Detroit News said Ford was offering the car with a standard V-6 engine or an "EcoBoost" engine. The fuel efficiency in the Taurus models would be 25 percent better than the Crown Victoria, which made its debut in the early 1980s.

Industry analysts said Ford's selling point with the Crown Victoria was durability.

"The bottom line is they have a police car that defines the American police car," said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics. "Police departments love it for a million reasons, including its durability."

That hasn't stopped General Motors Co. from plans to launch a Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, due out in 2011 and Chrysler Group from setting a goal of controlling 40 percent of the market -- with a Dodge Charger police car -- by 2012, the newspaper said.

Must cost lots of money to retro fit the Taurus into this cool cop car.
