Is the goatee this decade's mullet?
Is the goatee this decade's mullet?
Every decade has its fashion quirks that your kids and grandkids will use as proof that everyone who lived before them was a doofus. Afros and bell bottoms in the 70's, big hair in the 80's, mullets in the 90's.
According to Boston Globe columnist Reginald Armstrong, this is not really a debate, but a statement of fact.
"Goatees are going to be remembered as BAD fashion. When a fad starts amongst country and western stars then spreads to the population at large, the trajectory to BADland is certain. True, there are reasons to have a goatee- hair ennui due to premature baldness, overcompensation by guys with low test-counts, an effort to hide a double-chin, facial deformity and the like- but there is little doubt: When future directors of comedy movies want to get a laugh by evoking the f'ed up fashions of the 2000's, the goatee is going to be their stock piece."
Do you agree with this guy? I certainly don't.

It's been around a very long time. I don't view a goatee as a fad.
It was cool in the early in 60's and daddy-o, it's just as cool now.

It all depends on the person. Some gents look good with a trimmed goatee,
while others look good sporting this extreme style.

The Amish definitely take a goat to the next level. As for me I think a goat is timeless and therefore shouldn't be associated with one particular decade.

"The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" - The goatee
Goatees have been popular since before I even realized it was a distinct facial hair style. I grew mine around 1995 and since that time I've heard about the demise of the popularity of the goatee numerous times, yet here it comtinues being sported by men across all walks of life. The announcement of its death reminds me of that famous quote by Mark Twain.
It doesn't surprise me that a columist in a mainstream newspaper would attempt to use their position as a journalist to push an agenda. 2008 most definitely signaled that journalistic integrity is dead. Is it any wonder print media is scrambling to financially survive?
But why does journalism have such a bias against something as irrelevant as a goatee? I think it's twofold:
1) Facial hair is a masculine characteristic and pop culture praises women and has contempt for men. Look at our sitcoms and our TV commercials: the women are shown as beautiful, level-headed, multitasking-capable individuals who are annoyed that their existance has to be shared with the inferior male gender of obese, immature, knuckle-draggering boobs. Haven't I just described the design of every family-based TV sitcom? Facial hair is masculine and therefore it cannot be tolerated by an urban elitist crowd that believes all men should be metrosexual pseudo-women.
2) Goatees did have a sudden rise in popularity and due to the rules of the fashion industry, fads must pass in a few years. The goatee is not following the rules that the fashion elite has defined therefore the self-proclaimed enlightened few must knock it down a few pegs.
Another thing that's amusing about the Globe columnist's opinion is the abundance of that elitist attitude shown by those while describing others who do not belong to their latte-sipping echo-chamber of homogenous ideology. First off, they credit the goat's rise in popularity to the country and western scene when it reality the trend really became popular due to the grunge scene of the early 90s. Since grunge is still seen favorably by pop culture elitists and country is not, the journalist has done what journalists do: he engaged in revisionist history in order to slam the goatee by associating it with something their collective finds laughable - country music.
Like I said, the goatee has survived countless pronouncements of its death. Why? Because it's just a plain and basic style. When it comes to male trends, the only things that really seem to fade are those that are blatantly high-maintance, artificial, and contrived. A goatee is just a freaking beard without the sides! Those trendy "gangsta" beards of excessively mutilated facial hair will probably fade from popularity because they are so contrived and complicated. Unless goatees become strongly associated with something negative the way Charlie Chaplin-style 'staches became associated with Hitler in the 40s, beards became associated with hippies in the 70s, and mustaches became associated with homosexuality in the 80s I see no reason why goatees would not endure for the forseeable future.
Think of goatees as shorts. The public has accepted short pants as having value just like it has with goatees. While the style of shorts has changed over the years and men wearing the extreme "Daisy Dukes" are now ridiculed, shorts have not gone out of fashion. I think that's what we're seeing here. The goatee is not a trend but something plain like a mustache or beard that can either be worn in a dull standard manner outside of fashion interests, or it can be tweaked into something trendy.
Examples of what I do believe will become the bell bottoms / mullets of the facial hair world (what's strange is that most guys with mangled facial hair look like they could grow awesome facial hair if they wanted to):
And, yes, I'm biased. While I'm not blessed with thick flawless facial hair (geeze, and don't you just want to punch those guys who do have perfect facial hair genetics and whine about how terrible it is? It's like they're whining about being too rich, too athletic, or harrassed by the Swedish volleyball team), I do have a passable goatee. I can grow a beard, but between the somewhat pointy shape of my face, my facial hair flaws, and my shaved head I just don't look good with a beard. I'd hate to see the goatee become something of utter hatred because then I'd really be screwed.

Re: Is the goatee this decade's mullet?
As others have said, the goatee has been around too long to be considered a fad. However, it is probably true to say that is has/had periods when it goes in and out of favour with the 'fashionable' crowd, but then there will always be those who are unable to decide for themselves what they like or looks good on them and just follow whatever is the latest 'in thing'.
As with all things, no one style of facial hair will suit all people. Personally I get a bit fed up with journalists and columnists making generic pronoucements on what people should or should not be wearing as if we are all identical clones.

It's a matter of personal taste. There was nothing tasteful about a mullet.

I sport a goat and I take offense that anyone would imply that it's this decade's mullet.

****, if this cat is right, I jumped off the goatee bandwagon just in time, and joined the Fu Man Chu brigade!John wrote:Every decade has its fashion quirks that your kids and grandkids will use as proof that everyone who lived before them was a doofus. I strive to be au courant!
Naw, just kidding. I don't pay attention to fashion trends. But, looking back at my old goat picks, the thing does look scruffy and out of place. I think I am better with an exposed chin.

It's all about balance. A goat is the perfect balance for a gent with a shaved head.
